How to maintain a healthy relationship with God when it seems like your world is crumbling

Have you ever had one of those seasons where it feels like everything that could go wrong, actually did? Maybe you’re in the middle of it right now. You look around, and the life you spent years building feels like it’s coming apart at the seams.

Whether it’s a relationship ending, a health scare, or a professional setback, the weight of the world can feel crushing. In those moments, it is completely normal to feel like God is a million miles away. You might even find yourself asking, "Where are You in all of this?"

I want to start by telling you something very important: It’s okay to not be okay. Your faith isn't measured by your ability to keep a smile on your face while your heart is breaking. In fact, some of the most profound moments of spiritual growth happen in the middle of the mess.

Maintaining your relationship with God when the world is crumbling isn't about being perfect. It’s about being present. It’s about leaning into the One who promises to be close to the brokenhearted, even when you can’t feel His hand.

Give Yourself Permission to Feel

In our walk of faith, we sometimes get this idea that we have to "pray it away" or "faith it until we make it." But as a counselor, I can tell you that suppressing your emotions doesn't make them disappear: it just makes them louder later on.

Biblical figures like David, Job, and even Jesus didn't hide their pain. David’s psalms are filled with raw, unfiltered questions and cries for help. He didn’t wait until he had it all together to talk to God; he brought his messy reality right to the throne of grace.

Take a deep breath and acknowledge what you are feeling today. Are you angry? Scared? Disappointed? God already knows, and He isn’t intimidated by your honesty. He wants the real you, not the "Instagram-filtered" version of your spiritual life.

The Power of Honest Conversation (Lament)

Sometimes, we stop praying because we don’t know what to say. We feel like we need to use big, theological words, but God is looking for your heart. If all you can muster is, "God, I'm hurting, and I need help," that is a perfect prayer.

Try practicing the art of lament. Lament is simply bringing your pain to God and ending it with a choice to trust His character. It acknowledges the reality of the struggle while anchoring your soul in who He is.

Ask yourself these questions today:

  • What is the heaviest thing on my heart right now?

  • What is one thing I’m afraid to tell God because I think it sounds "unspiritual"?

  • Can I trust that He is big enough to handle my honest questions?

When you stop trying to perform for God, you create space for Him to actually comfort you. Healing starts when we stop pretending. If you're looking for a place to start that journey, my book Where the Healing of the Soul Starts dives deep into this process of authentic alignment.

Practical Ways to Stay Connected (When You Have Zero Energy)

When your world is crumbling, you likely don't have the mental or emotional bandwidth for an hour-long study session. That’s okay. Spring is a season of new growth, and just like a tiny sprout pushing through the soil, your connection with God can be small but powerful.

Here are a few practical, low-energy ways to stay connected:

  1. The "Five-Minute" Rule: Set a timer for five minutes. Just five. Spend that time sitting in silence, listening to a worship song, or reading one single verse.

  2. Scripture Meditation: Choose one verse and carry it with you all day. Instead of trying to read a whole chapter, focus on a promise like Isaiah 41:10: "Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God." Repeat it to yourself when anxiety rises.

  3. Voice Memo Prayers: If you’re too tired to focus your thoughts, try talking to God like you’re leaving a voice memo for a friend. Just talk while you’re driving or doing the dishes.

  4. Short-Form Gratitude: Even in the middle of a storm, there are "micro-mercies." Maybe it’s the way the spring sun feels on your face or a good cup of coffee. Acknowledging these small gifts keeps your heart soft.

Bridging Faith and Mental Health

At The Healed Soul, we believe that spiritual health and mental health are two sides of the same coin. Sometimes, the "crumbling" in our world affects our nervous system so deeply that we need more than just a prayer: we need a plan.

It’s not a lack of faith to seek professional help. In fact, it is an act of stewardship over the life God gave you. When you’re dealing with trauma or deep loss, your brain can go into "survival mode," making it hard to feel connected to anything, including God.

Counseling and coaching provide the tools to process the "crumbling" so you can find your footing again. We are here to help you bridge that gap between biblical truth and your actual lived experience. If you’re ready to dig deeper into your own healing, The Healed Soul Workbook is a great tool to help you navigate these internal waters.

Finding Your People in the Crumbling

One of the biggest mistakes we make when things get hard is isolating ourselves. We think we don’t want to "burden" others, or we feel ashamed that we aren't "stronger." But God never intended for you to carry the weight of a crumbling world on your own.

Community is a vital part of your relationship with God. Often, He uses the hands and feet of others to remind us that we aren't forgotten. Whether it's a small group, a close friend, or a supportive community event like our Girl Let's Talk sessions, reaching out is a step toward restoration.

Consider this: Who is one person you can be 100% honest with today? Reach out to them. Let them sit in the mess with you. You don’t need a solution; you just need to know you’re not alone.

Trusting the Process of a Soul in Alignment

Healing is rarely a straight line. There will be days when you feel strong and days when you feel like you’ve taken ten steps back. This is all part of the process of soul alignment.

Think about the seasons. After the cold, dormant winter, spring doesn't just happen all at once. There are muddy days, rainy days, and days where the wind is still biting. But underneath it all, life is moving.

Your "crumbling" might actually be a "clearing." Sometimes God allows things to fall away so that He can build something more resilient and beautiful in its place. It’s hard to see that when you're standing in the ruins, but trust that the Architect of your soul is still on the job.

You Are Not Alone in This Season

If you feel like you’re at the end of your rope, hold on. Your relationship with God isn't defined by how much you can do for Him right now; it's defined by how much He is doing for you.

He is the Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one. If you feel lost in the rubble of your circumstances, He is already there, looking for you, ready to carry you.

Take a moment today to simply sit. You don't have to fix the world. You don't have to solve the problems. Just be with the One who loves you more than you can imagine.

Ready to start your journey toward a more resilient soul?
